Our Program Model

Academic Innovation

Academic support is a necessary component of any educational program Students participating in the EXCEL program will attend lessons three days each week in three core subject areas: English language, mathematics, and social studies. In addition, students will have an opportunity to participate in exam

preparation courses. Lessons will take place three days each week - Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday - for three hours each day. EXCEL academic classes are taught by well-qualified, forward thinking teachers, who are committed to providing innovative and engaging activities and workshops. The EXCEL team also includes university students from Sierra Leone and the United States, who will serve as tutor/mentors which provides further individualized attention for the students.

 

Leadership and Community Development

To provide students with a holistic program that meets both their educational and social needs, students will participate in the leadership and community development program on Wednesdays and Fridays. These sessions will address current social issues with the goal of developing our students as leaders, meaningful contributors in their schools, their community, and throughout Africa and the world.

Leadership and Community Development sessions include, but are not limited to:

  • Character Building / Development
  • Peacebuilding/ Peacekeeping
  • Attitudinal Change Development
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Strategies for Success
  • Mentorship Program
  • Time Management, Note Taking, etc.
  • Gender Equality and Womens Empowerment

Leadership and community development workshops will address selected topics through a project based /service-learning program, community services projects, a guest speaker series, and field trips.

College and Career Preparation

Through the college and career component, students will participate in an intensive program that allows them to explore higher education and career options. This program will prepare students for entrance to colleges and universities located throughout the world, while also challenging students to create new options for themselves through our entrepreneurial development workshops.

Students participating in the college and career component can expect to: Know and be prepared for college/university entrance requirements (both in Sierra Leone and abroad) Participate in college and career planning and exploration Prepare for college entrance exams Participate in field trips Attend entrepreneurial workshops and training

In addition to the above lessons and workshops, students will have access to a resource center that includes computers, internet access, books, and well-qualified teachers, tutors and mentors, dedicating to educating the youth in Sierra Leone.
